Risk Analysis

Basic Information

It is necessary for each treehouse camp to create an individual risk management plan. The following information is exemplary and gives many insights into what is important and necessary for your risk management. It is not possible to provide a complete risk management that is generally applicable.

Risk Management includes all actions dealing with risks and involves the following stages:

Risk Identification (is done in the „Risk Analysis“)
Risk Analysis (is done in the „Risk Analysis“)
Risk Assessment (is done in the „Risk Analysis“)
Risk Monitoring (has to be done during the treehouse camp based on the „Risk Analysis“)
Risk Handling (has to be done during the treehouse camp based on the „Risk Analysis“)
Risk Control (has to be done during the treehouse camp based on the „Risk Analysis“)

Background Information

Standard Preventive Actions

Part of risk management is having basic rules which minimize risks. It is highly recommended to make it mandatory for every treehouse camp. They build a foundation of safety for every participant and team member:

First aid training for every team member
Safety training for every team member (proper behavior during the treehouse camp, securing in climbing activities, …)
Emergency and crisis management in written form (ensure that every team member is familiar with it)
Secure all necessary insurance
Get all necessary and needed permits and approvals

The risk analysis that is provided in the downloads is built upon these mandatory rules.

Stages of Risk Management

Stage	Measure	Description	Example
Stage 1	Avoiding risks	Includes all actions to avoid and prevent risks, so that participants and team members don’t get into risky situations	Don’t allow participants to enter the treehouse during the construction phase¹
Stage 2	Reducing risks	Includes all actions to reduce risks and/or the probability of occurance, so participants and team members are safe in risky situations	Only allow participants and team members to enter the treehouse during the construction phase if they wear PPE (personal protection equipment) and are secured
Stage 3	Transferring risks	Transfer risks which you can’t deal with by yourself to experts	Ensure that the rescue service is informed about the treehouse camp and the ambulance can reach the construction site within 30 minutes
Stage 4	Remaining risks	This stage includes the residual risk you are willing and able to carry by yourself. It is very important to set a risk limit and define measures if this limit is reached	It is possible that a thunderstorm comes up (how to behave in this case is fixed in the emergency or crisis management)

¹Of course this wouldn't make sense, if you want to build the treehouse together with participants. But this measure would avoid the risk, that participants get hurt. If you want participants to enter the treehouse during the construction phase, you have to find solutions on the stages 2-4.
